Abstract

A retrospective analyze embraced 1012 cases of cerebral stroke treated in Neurological Clinic of Medical Academy in Katowice in 1990, 1993, 1996, 1998 end 2000 year. The analysis considered such indicators as: sex, age of illness, type of stroke, time of treat, number end reasons of death, diagnostic examinations and some of know risk factors. Statistic analysis revealed that the average age of women was about 6.4 years higher (p < 0.05) then the average age of men. The mortality rate due to cerebral stroke has definitely reduced during examination years. In the ischemic stroke group the main cause of death was cardiological and in the hemorrhagic stroke group most deaths were caused by immediate effect of stroke. Analysing diagnostic investigations during years we observed increase importance of Computers Tomografy; diminished frequency of lumbar puncture. Arterial hypertension was the most frequent risk factor in-group of hemorrhagic strokes, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, coronary disease were the most frequent risk factors in hemorrhagic strokes.
