Abstract

The principle aims of epidemiology are to describe the distribution of disease in human populations, to elucidate the etiological factors responsible for disease and to evaluate risk factors which influence the natural history of the disease. The abrut onset of aphasia is usually the result of a transient ischemic attack or stroke, in which temporary or permanent damage occurs in those areas of the brain that govern the understanding and production of written and spoken language. Total aphasia occurs in 21–38% of stroke patients, is more common in ischemic stroke and among elderly. The risk of death and disability is higher among aphatic patients. The effectiveness of rehabilitation depends of intensity and duration of the sessions. In Poland only 48% of patients with stroke had speach rehabilitation. Methodological problems concerning epidemiological study of aphasia in stroke are discussed.
