Abstract

The term leukoaraiosis (LA) is used to describe an abnormal appearance of the subcortical brain whitte matter, especially in periventricular areas (hypodense areas on CT and hyperintense on T2 or FLAIR MRI sequences). LA is significantly associated with increasing age, especially in persons above 60 years of age. Chronic cerebral ischemia is considered to play an essential role in the pathogenesis of LA. The clinical features associated with LA are highly variable, ranging from minor neurologic deficit and mild cognitive impairment to severe disability and subcortical dementia. LA is connected with poor prognosis (in term of functional outcome or death), so its presence should be considered in terapeutic strategies.
