Abstract

Homocysteine is a sulphur amino acid which comes into the course of transformation of exogenous methionine. On its role in atherosclerosis pathogenesis first indicated McCully in 1969 whereas a lot of next studies gave immediate evidence for atherogenic influence. Now hyperhomocysteinemia is as a generally accepted risk factor of atherosclerosis as conventional factors. In the work we present an outline of historical studies on homocysteine, its metabolism, reasons of hyperhomcysteinemia, mechanism its pathogenic effect and norm of concentration.
