Abstract

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune response induced by gliadin and glutelin derivatives in genetically predisposed individuals. There is currently an increase in the frequency of CD diagnosis in most highly developed countries. Because of the course of the disease associated with chronic inflammation within the wall of the small intestine, it is assumed the idea that celiac disease predisposes to the development of cancer. Until now several studies was performed to evaluate the risk of developing malignant disease among patients with celiac disease. The results of retrospective studies are not conclusive, but some of them indicates an increased risk of developing certain types of cancer among patients with celiac disease. The purpose of this paper is to present the latest research on the issue of the development of cancer among patients with celiac disease. We would also like to draw attention to the risks which may have a significant impact on the development of cancer in this group of patients.
