Systemic therapy for advanced anal canal carcinoma. Case report and a review of the literature

Abstract

Carcinoma of the anal canal is a relatively rare malignancy. Distant metastases of this tumour are uncommon, and the knowledge on the efficacy of systemic treatment of disseminated disease is scarce. We report a case of a woman with metastatic anal canal carcinoma after primary definitive chemoradiotherapy who was treated with chemotherapy and cetuximab. We also review the literature on systemic treatment of patients with locally advanced or metastatic anal canal carcinoma.
