Management of anemia in elderly woman with ovarian cancer treated with platinum based chemotherapy

Abstract

We are presenting a case of an elderly woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer, treated in Department ofOncology, Lower Silesian Oncology Center in Wroclaw. Due to substantial sensitivity to platinum compoundsshe received 6 lines of platinum based chemotherapy. First and second line of chemotherapywas tolerated very well, but during subsequent lines of treatment with carboplatin she developed symptomaticanemia, which significantly influenced her quality of life and professional activity. Decrease ofchemotherapy dose intensity was also necessary. Initially she received blood transfusion, then darbepoetintreatment was initiated. She continued 5th and 6th line of chemotherapy with symptomatic improvement.
