Abstract

The abscopal effect, also known as extra-local, is a phenomenon in which local treatment of a neoplastic
lesion causes regression of metastatic lesions located at a considerable distance from it.
The mechanism of this phenomenon is still not fully understood, however, there are some assumptions
about its pathophysiology. In 2004, it was postulated for the first time that the immune system might be
responsible for anti-cancer activities in this mechanism. This study aims to present the phenomenon of
the abscopal effect, its probable mechanisms, to discuss the anti-tumor effect of radiotherapy combined
with immunotherapy, and to present clinical cases.
