Cytomegalovirus-induced immune thrombocytopenia

Abstract

Immune thrombocytopenia (IT) is an acquired disease, that is characterized by a decrease in platelet count in peripheral blood below 100 G/l. IT can arise as a primary condition (primary immune thrombocytopenia), or secondary to other diseases. IT secondary cases comprise among others persistent or acute viral infections. CMV infection is common throughout the world. The percentage of positive serological tests (IgG CMV) results in general adult population is approximately
60–100%. Treatment of IT in the presence of CMV is determined by the fact whether it is CMV-related or CMV-induced thrombocytopenia. The paper presents a case of the 55-year-old patient with CMV infection and secondary thrombocytopenia successfully treated with intravenous
immunoglobulin infusion.
