Thromboembolic complications in neoplastic disease — management recommendations of the Institute of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine

Hematologia 2013;4(1):56-64.

Abstract

Neoplastic disease is one of the major independent risk factors for the development of venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) that may involve: deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, the latter being responsible for quite a signifi cant complication rate. It is estimated that VTE manifests in approximately 20% of malignant neoplasms and is the second most frequent reason for mortality in the group of neoplastic patients either in inpatient or outpatient treatment. To optimize the utilization of all available resources for VTE prophylaxis and management in neoplastic diseases, the Institute of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine has developed and implemented a set of internal recommendations. As in previous publications of this kind, these recommendations refer mostly to clinical practice. For further details please consult http://www.ihit.waw.pl/rekomendacje-ihit.html.
