Recombinant factor VIIa for treatment of postpartum hemorrhage due to uterine atony

Abstract

Abstract Background: Obstetric hemorrhage is a life-threatening situation for every mother and child. NovoSeven is a recombinant, activated factor VII which may be useful in the treatment of uncontrollable hemorrhage. It accelerates hemostasis by direct activation of the factor X. Material and methods: The author presents her own experience with administration of NovoSeven at the Intensive Care Unit, Medical University Szczecin in the treatment of bleedings after standard methods failure. NovoSeven was given to patients in postpartum hemorrhage due to uterine atony, who did not present any signs of haemostatic disorders. Results: In all presented cases, bleeding symptoms abated and hemodynamic stabilization was obtained shortly after the drug administration. Conclusion: NovoSeven is a very effective agent in the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage.
