Abstract

Non-adherence to immunosuppression therapy constitutes a major barrier to postransplant care. Failure of transplant recipients take prescribed drugs properly may result in decreased quality of life, increased healthcare cost, proportion of acute rejection and morbidity. Despite obvious importance of adherence to immunosuppressant therapy, nonadherence is frequent among transplant recipients, with rates ranging from 15% to 60%. The manuscript discusses several issues concerning adherence to immunosuppressive therapy of solid organ transplant recipients and suggests strategies that may be used to enhance medication adherence. One among them is usage of drugs with modified release as tacrolimus once daily for instance.
