Pasteurella multocida as unusual etiological factor of peritonitis in peritoneal dialyzed patient

Abstract

A case report concerns peritonitis episode, which occurred in 22-year-old patient being the owner of small cat. In peritoneal fluid Pasteurella multocida Gram-negative bacteria were cultured. It colonizes mucous membranes of animals, especially cats. Circumstances of complication were clarified after receiving culture of dialysate. Patient reported that cat has usually accompanied him in the same room during peritoneal fluid exchanges. Target antibiotics was applied with positive therapeutic effect. Patient was reeducated. Proper training of the patient and continuous information about the necessity of hygiene and avoiding domestic animals in the same room during the performing of exchanges is very important in the proper peritoneal dialysis treatment.
