The role of nurse in treatment of renal anaemia in patients with chronic kidney disease

Abstract

Renal anaemia is one of the early symptoms in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This complication is present in 8–24% of patients in CKD stage 3 and 16–41% patients in CKD stage 4. More recent data indicates that anaemia occurs much earlier during the progression of CKD. Although it varies, people with CKD will typically have a haemoglobin concentration < 11 g/dL when the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is < 30 mL/min/1.73 m2. However, some people, particularly those with diabetes, can develop anaemia earlier or more severely when the eGFR is < 45 mL/min/1.73m2. Recent quidelines suggest that CKD should be considered as a possible cause of anaemia when the eGFR is < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2.
