Janusz Ostrowski, Bolesław Rutkowski
Forum Nefrologiczne 2014;7(2):137-140.

Abstract

In the article published in the 2nd issue of “Forum Nefrologiczne” (2014) in the series on the Honorary Members of the Society of Nephrology we set to present yet another renowned foreign scientist to have enjoyed this highest honour given by the Society. Following the depiction of the figure of prof. August Heidland of Germany, this time we would like to present one of the world’s most famous and influential nephrologists of the previous century — professor Franklin Harold Epstein of the USA. Not only was he an outstanding researcher and clinicist, a widely-renowned expert in pathophysiology of kidneys and the urinary system, but also a great teacher and a humanist. Poland was the country which he frequently visited and he also cooperated with Polish researchers including prof. Andrzej Manitius the former Head of the Department of Renal Diseases at the Medical University in Gdańsk. It was at this particular university that prof. Epstein received the title of doctor honoris causa.
