MDRD or CKD-EPI equation — revolution or evolution?

Abstract

The KDIGO 2012 Evaluation and Management of Chronic Kidney Disease Guidelines recommend implementation of CKD-EPI formula as a method of glomerular filtration rate estimation. This task is to be realised by nephrologists in local environments. Therefore, a thorough kwowledge of GFR estimation methods and differences between MDRD and CKD-EPI formulas is needed. Learning the characteristic features of both formulas is essential for clinical practice and proper interpretation of patient’s results. This article is a review of the current state of knowledge on this issue. It also gives up-to-date versions of formulas together with usage instructions.
