The effect of Dermedic Linum Emolient care products on selected parameters of objective and subjective barriers epidermis in patients with various types of eczema

Abstract

Introduction: Functioning of the epidermal barrier depends on its proper construction — the content of the fatty acids, keratin as well as corneocytes and corneodesmosomes. Disruption of metabolic processes within the epidermis leads to skin inflammation, including eczema. Unfortunately, the number of studies assessing the effect of emollients on biophysical skin parameters are lacking.

Materials and methods: 30 adults with different types of eczema were enrolled into the study. Participants of the study used Dermedic Linum Emolient series for 4 weeks (28 days). Each participant used a whole range of preparations according to the pattern: intensively oiling preparation, scalp-protecting shampoo and lipid-protective cream every day, bath and shower oil 2 times a week.

Results: After 4 weeks of the study, significant reduction of epidermal water loss (TEWL) was observed on the forehead skin: 12.98 ± 3.74 to 7.86 ± 3.69 g/h/m2, torso: 7.79 ± 3.3 to 5.14 ± 1.65 g/h/m2 and lower legs: 8.80 ± 3.84 to 6.74 ± 20.95 g/h/m2. Sebum secretion increased significantly on the skin of the forearms (mean ± SD): 27.31 ± 10.72 to 52.65 ± 16.95 μg/cm, torso: 22.51 ± 6.46 to 44.89 ± 17.84 μg/cm2 and lower legs: 25.36 ± 9.17 to 38.15 ± 21.93 μg/cm2.

Conclusions: The study shows in an objective way that the regular use of Dermedic Linum emollients improves biophysical skin parameters, as well as reduces the severity of pruritus, redness and skin dryness in patients with different types of eczema.
