The influence of emollients — Dermedic Linum Emolient intensive moisturising cream® and Dermedic Linum Baby Emolient intensive moisturising butter® on selected epidermal barrier parameters in atopic dermatitis patients and on clinical tolerance assessment

Abstract

Introduction: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a frequent inflammatory skin disease with chronic relapsing course. It can affect patients of all ages and have dramatic impact on their quality of life. Baseline treatment includes systematic emollients use. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of Dermedic Linum Emolient intensive moisturising cream® and Dermedic Linum Baby Emolient intensive moisturising butter® on chosen parameters of epidermal barrier and on clinical tolerance in aspect of itching reduction (by visual analogue scale VAS), and lack of irritation in AD patients.

Material and methods: The study consist of 40 AD subjects, 20 adults (mean age 30.15 y.o.) and 20 children (mean age 2. 3 y.o.) with mild course of disease. Adult AD patient applied Dermedic Linum Emolient intensive moisturising cream® while AD children used Dermedic Linum Baby Emolient intensive moisturising butter® twice daily for 4 weeks. In each subject itch intensity (VAS), pH (phametr), TEWL (tewametr), sebum secretion (sebumetr) were determined before treatment and after 4 weeks of emollient application. In adult group 4 weeks of treatment provoked significant decrease in mean TEWL value.
Results: Statistical analysis showed that emollient use caused an increase in sebum secretion after 4 weeks of treatment. Similar observation was noted among AD children.
Conclusions: Based on obtained results one may conclude that Dermedic Linum Emolient (intensive moisturising butter, intensive moisturising cream) improved significantly dry skin in the course of AD, as well as, have high safety profile.
