Special dermatological vehicles in concomitant therapy of chronic dermatoses
Abstract
Chronic cutaneous disorders are characterized by skin-barrier deficit leading to increased transepidermal water loss, penetration of pathogens or irritation due to external factors. Special dermatological vehicles (SDV), also referred to as emollients are wide group of topical preparations that replenish skin barrier and increase its hydration, lubrication and elasticity. It was observed that among patients suffering from atopic dermatitis and psoriasis basic treatment regimen (based on topical corticosteroids) supported by application of SDV results in reduction of cutaneous symptoms and improvement of quality of life parameters, while providing high safety profile. This review article covers most relevant aspects associated with application of SDV in dermatological practice and focuses on results of clinical trials concerning the importance of SDV in concomitant therapy o chronic dermatoses.
