Acquired coagulation disorders are common in the elderly because they can develop in the course of various diseases which prevalence increases with age. Bleeding is also a frequent complication of antithrombotic therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation. On the other hand treatment of bleeding may increase the risk of thromboembolic complications in older patients. Pathogenesis, diagnostic approach and management of the most important acquired coagulation disorders are discussed in this review.
