Kidney transplantation with a renal artery anastomosis to the inferior mesenteric artery - a case report
Acta Angiologica 2003;9(1):49-52.
Abstract
For the recent years renal transplantation operative technique has became standard and simplified. Usual
revascularization technique involves anastomosis of the renal artery with either external iliac artery end-to-side or internal iliac artery end-to-end. Although possible in most cases, such mode of anastomosis can be
useless in the presence of extended iliac or aortic atherosclerosis. It can force transplant surgeon to seek
alternative ways of revascularisation, with either arterial reconstruction or use of other vessels as supplying
arteries. Occasionally iliac arteries can be of no use due to other reasons. We present the case report
suggesting that inferior mesenteric artery can be considered as an alternative recipient vessel for anastomosis
with renal artery of the transplanted kidney.
