Abstract

Sudden, severe anxiety may seriously interfere with the affected person’s functioning and hamper daily activities or make them impossible to carry out. This also refers to the family, professional (educational) and other aspects of life. Such a type of anxiety should be managed promptly to restore a feeling of self-control in relation to the patient’s mental state and behaviour. In the paper, a report of three cases regarding patients with anxiety disorders who have experienced very severe anxiety episodes is presented. In two cases, the therapy was continued or an antidepressant was administered. A thorough history of the episode circumstances and anxiety-related thoughts revealed a psychological background of exacerbation or occurrence of the anxiety disorder. Alprazolam sublingual tablets were administered in order to achieve rapid reduction in the severity of the condition and to restore the patients’ ability to control their emotional states and activities. A combination of alprazolam sublingual tablets and the intervention based on the understanding of the intrapsychic meaning of the circumstances that caused the symptoms was found to be an effective method of severe anxiety symptom relief.
