Abstract

Medical staff working at mental health care facilities believes that patients’ aggressive behaviors are relatively rare but also inevitable part of the job. The personnel commonly follow such a belief and accept aggressive episodes due to absence of advance awareness training programs and gaps in the standard operational procedures that could minimize patients violent acts and enhance workplace safety. The systemic solutions how to proceed when facing patient aggression are still weak or missing. The medical staffers should not be left alone with negative emotions or fear after they were confronted with the patients aggression. The co-workers’ supporting conversations and professional advice to the victimized personnel can significantly help to cope with difficult emotions, and in the long term prevent frustration and burnout.
