Abstract

The presented scientific text includes the contemporary, complex definition of a mixed episode occurring in the course of bipolar disorder. Furthermore, the authors showed the results of reports concerning pharmacological and non- -pharmacological methods used in treating the described episode. Next, the following groups of medicaments were discussed: antipsychotics, mood stabilizing drugs and memantine. Unquestionably, an alternative for pharmacotherapy of mixed episodes has been electroconvulsive therapy which was described at the end. The authors also attempted to critically evaluate available reports as well as take advantage of the research findings in everyday clinical practice.
