Abstract

Acute leukemias account for about 40% of all leukemias in adults. Epidemiological data on acute leukemias incidence are needed to estimate the requirements for special diagnostic procedures and treatment. In 2003, the Institute of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine established on behalf of the Polish Adult Leukemia Group (PALG) a registry of acute leukemias morbidity in adults to which new cases could be submitted. Between 2004–2010 around 650 new cases were thus annually reported. Over 80% consisted of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The age-adjusted incidencerate was 2.2/100,000 for all leukemias, 1.8/100,000 for AML and 0.4/100,000 for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Such trends rates were similar to other registries according to patient age. Analysis of diagnostic procedures demonstrated increased but as yet inadequate rates in performingcytogenetic and molecular testing.
