Abstract

A growing number of studies is currently carried out to determine the alterations in cellular metabolism of tumor cells and their infl uence on proliferation of cells and tumor growth. The survival of tumor cells depends on the availability of nutrients, mainly glucose. Glucose in a tumor ismetabolized primarily in the process of glycolysis, which takes place even under unlimited oxygen availability. In this review, we present the current view of interactions between metabolic and signaling pathways in cancer cells, with hematological malignancies as a major focus. We also discuss potential applications of metabolism-modulating agents in the diagnosis and therapy of tumors.
