Safety of hematopoietic stem cell donors

Jan Styczyński
Hematologia 2012;3(1):58-65.

Abstract

An increasing number of stem cell donors remains a key element required for the progress instem cell transplantation. In the beginning of 2012, a total number of 18.6 million donors havebeen registered worldwide, including 244 thousands of Polish citizens. In 2010, the ratio oftransplants from Polish donors reached 25% of all unrelated transplants performed in ourcountry. Before the stem cell collection, the donor has to be assessed for the risk of diseasetransmission to recipient, safety of stem cell collection for donor and full understanding of stemcell donation. There are 2 methods of stem cell collection: bone marrow harvest and peripheral blood stem cell apheresis. Donation of stem cells is a safe procedure for donor. Nevertheless, mild adverse events are relatively frequent, however disappearing in most cases within 2 daysafter the collection. The number of requests for stem cell donation is increasing, in parallelwith number of transplants. It results in growing medical experience and donors safety.Although medical progress and standards of patients care contribute to systematic decrease ofadverse events for donors, the risk still exists. This should not be the reason for anyone towithdraw an agreement for stem cell donation for the sick patient awaiting for stem celltransplantation.
