Abstract

With this paper we are opening the 6th year of publications on outstanding figures of the Polish and world nephrology who have enjoyed the title of the Honorary Member of the Polish Society of Nephrology (PTN), the highest title given by the Society to those of remarkable input in the development of the field or the organisation itself. Over the 35 years of its existence, the title has been granted to more than 70 individuals. To date as many as 20 outstanding figures have been portrayed in “Forum Nefrologiczne” with Professor Tadeusz Orłowski, PTN’s first President, opening the hall of fame. Last year was completed with the presentations of prof. Edmund Nartowicz from Bydgoszcz, Poland and prof. Vittorio Bonomini form Bologna, Italy. This time we set to depict the figure of Professor Mieczysław Lao. M. Lao was not only a remarkable representative of the Polish nephrology, but also the directly-related transplantology. He was the Director of the Institute of Transplantology in Warsaw, the founding father of the PTN as well as the founding father and the first President of the Polish Transplantation Society. In recognition of his scientific, clinical, educational and organisational achievements he received the title of the Honorary Member of both associations as well as a number of awards and state, ministry and university distinctions.
