Abstract

Estimation of kidney function is crucial in the evaluation of prospective living kidney donors. Although unsurpassed in their precision methods of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) measurement with exogenous substances are invasive, expensive, and carry a risk for anaphylactic reactions. GFR estimated from serum creatinine (eGFRcr) can be easily calculated, and eGFRcr is commonly used. Recently, it has been shown that GFR estimated from the combination of serum creatinine and cystatin C (eGFRcr-cys) is generally more accurate than eGFRcr and is recommended.
