Modified release tacrolimus in renal transplant recipients

Magdalena Durlik
Forum Nefrologiczne 2014;7(1):17-23.

Abstract

Tacrolimus modified release was introduced in kidney transplantation in 2007. In this review results of randomized, pharmacokinetic and observational trials with TOD in de novo renal transplant recipients and stable renal transplant recipients were discussed. TOD appears as effective and safe as tacrolimus twice-daily. TOD may increase patient’s adherence and decrease gastrointestinal complications. Lower exposition to TOD needs judicious monitoring of tacrolimus levels to ensure therapeutic trough target is achieved. Immunosuppressive regimens with tacrolimus once-daily seems a promising alternative in optimalization and individualization therapy in renal transplant recipients.
