New and old antibiotics in the treatment of peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis patients

Abstract

Peritonitis is the most common cause of techniquefailure in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and treatment guidelines have been changing over the time.Current data show that serum levels of glycopeptides need to be kept higher than would be otherwiseindicated. Vancomycin-resistant gram-positive bacteria seem to be increasingly common causeof PD-related peritonitis, therefore there is a needto know pharmacokinetics of the novel antibiotics (linezolid, daptomycin and quinupristin/dalfopristin) and get experience in using them. Antibiotic compatibility studies should be conducted with currently available biocompatible PD solutions.
