Abstract

Background. Non-atopic eczema is chronic, relapsing, inflammatory skin condition associated with epidermal barrier dysfunction. Eczematous skin, irritated and dry, is susceptible to skin infections. However little is known about influence of emollients on biophysical changes in skin in non-atopic eczema. Thus, our aim was evaluation of clinical skin changes after application of Linum Dermedic emollients and to assess changes in biophysical parameters of the skin before and 4 weeks after daily application of an emollient.

Material and methods. We recruited 30 patients with different types of non-atopic eczema. All participants applied emollients on their foreheads, left forearms, trunks and left lower legs for 4 weeks. The biophysical properties: pH, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and sebum content were measured and compared to those before enrollment to the study and after 4 weeks after application of an emollients.

Results. After 4 weeks of treatment, there was a statistically significant increase in sebum content on the forehead, forearms, trunk and lower legs, decrease in TEWL on the forehead and lower legs and a decrease in pH on the trunk. Significant changes in subjective parameters measured with VAS were also noted.

Conclusions. Our study provides an insight into changes in eczematous skin after application of an emollients. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the emollient treatment in patients with eczema with regard its influence on biophysical parameters of epidermis.
