Abstract

Sleep apnea is the presence of intervals between breaths during the sleep that last longer than 10 sec, or air-flow reduction up to 50%. The most common type of sleep apnea is the obstructive sleep apnea (90% of cases). The other types are: the central apnea caused by the disturbances of the respiratory drive and mixed sleep apnea. The sleep apnea isa common disorder but it remains under diagnosed in most cases. Because of the increased risk of circulatory diseases, neurological diseases and metabolic disorders, the diagnostics for sleep disordered breathing, should be extended. The following article presents the current state of knowledge about the sleep apnea as the risk and prognostic factorin patients with coronary artery disease with preserved left ventricular systolic function.
