Abstract

In the paper, early results of endovascular treatment of critical stenoses of the internal carotid artery (ICA)are presented. Twenty-nine patients from the group with elevated risk of surgery with concomitant cardiac diseases suffering from critical (> 70%) and symptomatic ICA stenoses were qualified to the procedure. There were 9 women and 20 men in the group, the mean age of the patients was 68 years (50–78). All the procedures were performed under local anaesthesia and in some procedures the neuroprotective filter was used. The patients’ cases were studied carefully during the perioperative period. One patient revealed the symptoms of massive ischaemic stroke, in two patients symptoms of TIA occurred, and in a further four hypotonia was observed directly after stent implantation.
The early results of endovascular treatment of critical stenoses of the internal carotid artery in this group of patients are good, although further follow-up and late results’ evaluation are necessary.
