Abstract

Background Hypertension related to obesity is a growing healthproblem. Many studies indicate relation between BMI andblood pressure, showing obesity and hypertension as independentpredictors of cardiovascular disease. There is a cause —effect correlation between epidemiology of hypertension andobesity. It is estimated that up to 80% of hypertension cases in Poland is associated with increased body weight. Objective of the study was prevalence of overweight andobesity in patients with hypertension and selected cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Material and methods This was a retrospective study of335 adult patients with diagnosed hypertension hospitalizedin the first half of 2011 in the Department of InterventionalCardiology of The Medical University ofBialystok Clinical Hospital.

Conclusions Patients with diagnosed hypertension andoverweight or obesity were significantly younger comparedto those with hypertension and normal body weight indicatingthe need for greater prevention in this group ofpatients. Patients with hypertension and abnormal bodyweight suffer more often from diabetes and dyslipidemia, and had greater left ventricular mass compared topatients with normal weight. During the hospitalizationpatients with normal body weight achieved better reductionof systolic blood pressure.
