"Check your blood pressure once a year"
The pilot study of the polish hypertension prevention program
Abstract
Background In July 1996, a trial "Check your blood pressure once a year" was performed in cooperation with the health insurance company "PZU-Życie" in order to evaluate the characteristics of the population which is sensitive to the hypertension prevention program.
Methods About 150 medica1 students in 70 cities in Poland measured blood pressure in persons who showed interest in their blood pressure values. Simple antropometric and social characteristics such as: age, weight, height, smoking and treatment were also collected. Each person received abbreviated guidelines according to JNC V Report and, if necessary, referred to general practitioner. Totally 308 361 subjects were investigated.
Results The incidence of hypertension which could be assessed using data from the present study is 38.8% for females and 46.6% for males as averaged for all subjects when the threshold 140/90 mm Hg was used. Using the 160/95 mm Hg criterion the numbers were 29.9% and 30.2% respectively. In studied subjects only 25% of hypertensive females and 15 hypertensive males were effectively treated. The assessment of incidence of hypertension was in agreement with the previous epidemiological studies concerning subpopulations of Poland.
Conclusions A huge number of studied subjects allows to characterize the population which was sensitive to the hypertension prevention program. Although the study was not designed as an epidemiological one, it may be a good measure to evaluate the possible effects of hypertension prevention trial.
